The city of Dubai, sometimes called Dubai City, lies within the emirate of Dubai along the Persian Gulf, one of the seven emirates comprising the United Arab Emirates. Although geographically smaller than Abu Dhabi, the largest of the U.A.E., Dubai has the largest population of all of the emirates.
Unlike the other emirates, only a small fraction of Dubai’s total revenue comes from oil, with an ever-increasing percentage coming from tourism, convention activities and construction projects. Immigrants, largely from south Asian countries, make up a substantial portion of Dubai’s population, in contrast to the other emirates populated mostly with U.A.E.-born natives. Accommodations in Dubai range from villas and apartments to commercial hotels, with a 6,500-room hotel and shopping complex, called Asia, Asia and billed as the largest hotel in the world, planned for construction within the next few years.
